First Superman Trailer is medium to bad.
What's the tone here guys?
The new trailer for Superman from what is now billed as “DC Studios” is here and I have some thoughts! They’re mostly confused thoughts, namely, what is the tone of this film? The score makes it seem like this is some sort of larger than life story but James Gunn as filmmaker is…very weird? There’s a dog! Can a serious Superman movie have a flying dog? Me thinks, not.
There seems to be 5-8 villains in the film and Nathan Fillions wig is a crime against filmmaking. There seems to be 4-6 storylines across multiple cities and timeframes. There seems to be a lot of concerned people with concerned faces. I don’t know man. This feels like a tough one.
A few highlights here include David Corenswet being hot. Which, let’s face it, is key to the mythology of Superman. He was quite the scene stealer from this summers Twisters and I have high hopes for his take on the (hot) journalist from Kansas. He’s an immigrant, a (hot) blue eyed All-American immigrant. It’s so timely, don’t you think?
The biggest miss here is showing Lois and Clark kissing, they should have left that for the film and built up some of that tension. Rachel Brosnahan is going to have to do a lot of work here (not sure if she’s up to it) but for the love of god can we make her more than a #girlboss #girlfriend.
Unlike other Superman film adaptations, I have some hope in James Gunn as a director but this first trailer makes this feel on par with a CW show and that’s actually a compliment. Heres hoping this is just a badly put together trailer by a studio that still has no idea what to do with this IP.
Is this the dawn of a new era? Doesn’t feel like it, quite yet.
